Integrating into Village Life.

The Biggest Test!

This is never easy, but there are a few things you can do to help ease your way into village life.

The first is the most important: SPEAK FRENCH!

If you do speak French, even only a little, use it - your efforts will be appreciated. If you don't speak French, learn! Even if you only learn a few words or phrases, it is a start. Don't assume, either, that your neighbours don't speak English, many French people know a little, and quite a few know more than a little. The French tend to be perfectionists about their language, and hesitate to speak anybody ele's language badly. However, as an "etranger" you will be permitted to murder their language, and they will applaud your efforts.

The second is "Get Involved".

Village life in France, as elsewhere, tends to rely on a core of people to organise and prepare the activities which keep village identity intact. Such groups are usually short of volunteers and offers to help will normally be gratefully accepted. It is a great way to meet your neighbours in an informal way. There is no need to be "pushy"; a simple offer to assist is all that is usually needed. After a few years you may well feel part of village life! Don't get too complacent, though; if you stay for 20 years you will still be an "etranger".

We became involved in village activities a year after our arrival, and I now hunt with the village hunt, and am designated to be the next President of the Comité du Fêtes. I shall probably stand for election to the municipal council at the next election, if asked, and that will be the true test as to how well integrated we are!
