Formalities

The formalities for residing in France.

As with most countries, if you wish to come and live and work in France, there are certain formalities which have to be observed.

If you are a citizen of an EU country, with right of abode in that country, you may enter France freely. If you have a job to go to, or intend to seek a job, you must apply for a Carte de Séjour within 3 months of arrival. Non-EU citizens (or EU passport holders with no right of abode) must hava a visa for entry, and a visa d'etablissement to take up work.

In order to obtain a Carte de Séjour, it will normally be necessary to show that you have found a job or started a business. If retired you will have to show that you have sufficient resources To apply for the Carte, start at your local Mairie. The process is, in theory, very simple; but much depends upon the person who handles your application. Some can be very helpful, others can be obstructive. I am happy to report that our experiences were very good, and the whole process went smoothly. As a minimum you will need:

• Your passport (valid)
• 3 passport sized photos (Note: French requirements are for a completely plain background on the photo.)
• Birth and (if applicable) Marriage Certificates. Thes must be translated into French by an approved Translator (To find an approved translator, in France enquire at the nearest Embassy or Consulate for your country, outside France, enquire at the French Embassy or Consulate.)
• Proof of residence - receipt for rent, or certifacate of property purchase(obtainable from the Notaire)
• Contract of Employment or proof of being in business or self-employed. Proof of income if not intending to work
• Some people have been asked for a medical certificate, or an affidavit that they have no criminal record. (We weren't asked for either)
• It is advisable to know the full names and dates and places of birth of your parents and grandparents! If you don't have this information you are bound to be asked!
