The formalities for residing in France.
As with most countries, if you wish to come and live and work in France, there are certain formalities which have to be observed.
If you are a citizen of an EU country, with right of abode in that country, you may enter France freely. If you have a job to go to, or intend to seek a job, you must apply for a Carte de Séjour within 3 months of arrival. Non-EU citizens (or EU passport holders with no right of abode) must hava a visa for entry, and a visa d'etablissement to take up work.
In order to obtain a Carte de Séjour, it will normally be necessary to show that you have found a job or started a business. If retired you will have to show that you have sufficient resources To apply for the Carte, start at your local Mairie. The process is, in theory, very simple; but much depends upon the person who handles your application. Some can be very helpful, others can be obstructive.
